God is Calling You to Homeschool. Now What?
If you follow me on socials or watched youtube videos, you may have heard me share my story before. It was a whirlwind of changes during the pandemic—renovating our expectations of education and family life. The chaos of virtual learning made me think, “I can do better for my children than this!”
So there we were: my family transitioned into a stay-at-home life for me, while my husband worked from home. Our two girls were being homeschooled, and we had a baby on the way, all amidst a national crisis. It’s hard to put into words just how overwhelming it was. While our kids were thriving in many areas, Destiny faced her own challenges.
Eventually, we made the tough decision to send our kids back to public school. I thought about trying to rejoin corporate America, to find a balance again. But, as life goes, God had other plans for us.
My daughters experienced a lot in public schools. Their grades were always excellent, but it was clear that the system was not meeting our expectations yet again. It’s easy to overlook the needs of our children when everything seems fine on the surface. However, I began to realize that my generation has its own unique approach to raising our kids, and something was missing. Let me tell you how God works!
Our decision to homeschool again didn’t happen overnight. I felt like I was drowning, trying to balance being a teacher, mom, wife, and homemaker, all while keeping it together. The last thing I ever thought I would do was reconsider homeschooling. But deep down, I knew. I understood that my kids needed us—us as their primary educators and guides. If we wanted to build a strong spiritual, mental, and physical foundation for them, we had to go back to homeschooling.
It got to a point where I was constantly running into teachers, principals, and other moms whose kids seemed miserable everywhere I went. It felt almost like God was nudging me, ensuring that I didn’t suppress or ignore the feelings that were bubbling inside me. So what happened next? I started researching—A LOT!
I didn’t just look for curriculums; I realized that homeschooling isn’t solely about the books you teach from. I needed to know how I could do things differently this time around. How could I better balance my business, homeschooling, and managing our home? I sought out communities that could support us and ways to keep my kids socially active.
I often see moms who are considering homeschooling become immediately overwhelmed by the sheer number of curriculums available and wondering if their kid will be happy with their decision. It’s a common struggle, and I was there too! But remember, it’s not only about what you teach—it’s about how you teach and the loving environment you create for your children.
In our journey of homeschooling, I discovered the beauty of flexibility and connection with my kids that I didn’t fully grasp before. While it might feel daunting at first, the rewards of homeschooling can be incredibly fulfilling. So, if you find yourself in a similar position, know that you're not alone and that there are resources and communities out there to support you on this worthwhile journey.
Establishing your non-negotiables as a homeschooling family is crucial for a successful and fulfilling experience. Here are some essentials that i based our experience on for homeschool moms and those just starting their homeschooling journey.
Non-Negotiables for Homeschooling Success
Set a Routine
Creating a consistent daily schedule helps provide structure for both parents and children. A well-planned routine can ease stress and set clear expectations. By routine, i do not mean that you need to know what you are doing every minute of every day. That is unrealistic. I mean create time blocks or at the very minimum an idea of what each day will look like.Balance Academics and Life Skills
While focusing on core subjects like math, science, and language arts is important, incorporating life skills such as cooking, budgeting, and communication is equally valuable. This holistic approach prepares children for real-world experiences. My kids love these real world interactions and as an added bonus, it helps me out as well!Foster a Love for Learning
It’s vital to instill curiosity and enthusiasm in your kids. Encourage them to explore interests outside of formal curriculum work, allowing them to ask questions and seek answers. Does your child desire to learn spanish or an instrument? You now have a little more time in your schedule to peak their interest!Prioritize Family Time
Make sure to carve out time for family activities. Whether it’s game night or taking a field trip together, these experiences promote bonding and create lasting memories.Flexibility in Approach
Homeschooling isn't one-size-fits-all. Be open to adjusting your teaching methods until you find what works best for your family's unique learning style. We live in a world where we are consumed with content. While I make homeschooling content, I encourage every mom to find what works for you! Not only that, connect with moms who share the same values as you! She may not do everything the same but if your values are the same, you can still encourage and support each other along the way.Regular Assessment
Keeping track of progress is essential. Whether through formal assessments or informal check-ins, knowing where your child stands academically can help guide future lessons.Community Connection
Forming relationships with other homeschooling families can provide support and encouragement. Engaging with a broader community allows for collaboration and shared resources.
Adhering to these non-negotiables can help set the groundwork for a thriving homeschool environment, making the journey smoother for both parents and children. Remember, you're not in this alone; connecting with fellow homeschool moms can be incredibly beneficial. Adjusting as needed and staying committed to these foundational elements will lead you towards achieving your educational goals.
If you have come across this blog post, it is my desire that you begin your journey a little less stressed and overwhelmed! God has called you to pour into your children which also means he has equipped you with what and who you need to succeed!! All you have to do is trust him!
